Setapp is designed to provide full access to all app features with no limitations and ads. This commitment successfully works for ~97% of Setapp apps; however, some exceptions may occur due to the variety of business models that our partners use. Mostly, limitations appear when app developers bear additional costs while using third-party services or data providers, such as cloud storage or OpenAI technologies. Such expenses can go up really high and can’t be covered by a Setapp subscription alone. Even though the Setapp team and app developers are trying to include the maximum of what can be offered via Setapp subscription, there is still a possibility that app features that depend on external service providers may be somewhat limited in the Setapp version. In such cases, app developers introduce a separate plan for Setapp.
See the table with the apps that have limitations. We'll also explain why Setapp and the app developers were forced to apply them.
Apps | Limitations | Why? |
AI apps |
Setapp introduces AI credits to measure and charge AI usage. Number of credits depends on your subscription plan:
Note: AI models Сlaude, Mistral, and Stable Diffusion are not covered by Setapp AI credits. You can use your own OpenAI key to access these models. Read more about AI credits and AI+ subscription plans in our article.
|
If you used AI apps out of Setapp, you'd have to register in OpenAI, get your own OpenAI key, and then insert it into the apps while paying for AI service on your own. Setapp simplified the flow for you. We suggest our Setapp OpenAI key so you can use TypingMind, Elephas, Plus, and other AI apps smoothly with no additional steps. However, Setapp is charged for each request sent by our subscribers to OpenAI, so we had to set limits to make this business model workable. Note: You can use your own OpenAI key within Setapp for AI+ apps. Then, you don't need to upgrade your plan to AI+ even if you use these apps intensively. |
MoneyWiz 2023 |
Only 1 data provider is available to connect to banks. |
MoneyWiz, as an app, develops tracking of your expenses, generates reports, and conducts other calculations. However, it doesn't communicate directly with banks while using open banking platforms such as Plaid, Salt Edge, etc. MoneyWiz pays to the banking platforms every time a user accesses the bank's data. To make its business model in Setapp profitable, MoneyWiz can provide access to banks via one provider. |
CleanShot X |
You get the "CleanShot X + Cloud Pro" plan, which is limited to 10 GB of storage. |
Usually, apps don't buy and support storage servers themselves. Instead, they pay for cloud storage services such as Amazon Web Services, which physically store needed data. That’s why each app finds the balance between its price and expenses. With the Setapp subscription, you can access the apps’ full features, but storage space is limited to make the business model profitable. |
Backtrack |
You get the full-featured paid version of Backtrack, limited to 75 monthly saved recordings. |
|
|
You get the "Premium Individual" plan, the most feature-rich offer in Spark for individual subscribers. Spark also provides a team subscription plan, "Premium Teams," designed for teamwork. However, we can't provide corporate plans for individual subscribers for apparent reasons. Nevertheless, "Premium Individual" still contains collaboration features that are limited to the values you can see on the left. |
|
You get the "Flow" plan, which includes 250 emails/month and 2500 characters (500 words) of custom instructions. |
The app uses OpenAI technology to provide its service. Each request brings extra costs, so these limitations are necessary to keep the business model profitable. |
|
You get the "Growth" plan. See what it includes here. |
Recently, Canary Mail introduced new pricing and added a more advanced "Pro+" tier, which is particularly tailored for teams. While it may appear that Setapp subscribers are missing out on some features, we want to reassure you that you'll still have access to all the features you enjoyed before the pricing change — except for the "PGP & SecureSend encryption" option. |

The documents remain stored in the file system. |
As of November 22, MindNode is offered in two versions: MindNode Classic (the existing version) and MindNode Next. The key difference lies in how documents are stored:
Some features available in MindNode Classic have not yet been implemented in MindNode Next. For now, Setapp subscribers will continue to have access to MindNode Classic, which will still receive updates and bug fixes. Once MindNode Next achieves feature parity with MindNode Classic, the developers will include it in Setapp as well. |
We invite you to discover dozens of Setapp apps without functionality or storage limitations.
